Last year, in 2024, I went through several life changes that had me facing the need to leave my  job and stay home with my husband of nearly 50 years. Togetherness is lovely, but guess what? I needed "mom-time." I needed a new challenge to replace the challenges of working. I needed a way to take time out for for self care.

Me at the 2016 New Year's Day Polar Bear Plunge on Camano Island, WA

I began reflecting on the truly incredible amount of plastic waste we were making (even though I had banned plastic wrap and single use baggies from our home). I knew I needed to take it up a level. That's when I dusted off my once-upon-a-time craft from the 80's and started making soap again. I began replacing over-packaged detergent soaps that made my skin itch and look like a dried-out snakeskin with my own soaps.

I made them with both my, ahem, "mature" skin and my husband's allergies in mind. A monster was born. That led to solid dish soap in reusable ramekins, refills, body butters and cuticle salve in refillable, recyclable containers. I then started expanding my soap for more skin types. Viola! Island Girl Soap was born.

Island Girl Soaps' mission is to build a healthier and more positive world, one bar of soap, one tray of lip balm and one jar of body butter at a time.  I've found that self care is key to happiness. If Momma ain't happy, ain't NOBODY happy.

Momma, take care of yourself! Put down that bar of over-processed detergent and pick up a pure bar of soap made with loving care. You deserve an hour to yourself to soak in a tub. You deserve the time to care for your skin and your soul. Everything will still be there for you when you come out, but you'll be refreshed and ready to go back into the fray.
